In the dream, I was at work, Gary's Games and Hobbies. A guy came in the store, reached across the counter, grabbed a couple hundred dollars from the till and ran out the door. A bit later on we had the usual group of teenagers playing Magic and other games when another guy came in. He was big and walked with a limp, and joined the gamers. After a while I noticed that he had a gun, so I told him he either had to leave or let me hold the gun for him. He gave me the gun, a nice Glock pistol.
After that the day went on as usual. At closing time, I started ushering everyone out, but there were still a few handers on -- those wanting to chat with me and some kids still waiting for their parents. Then the guy with the limp demanded that I give him all the money. I told him to go to hell, still being pretty pissed off about the snatch and grab. He said that he was serious and that he'd come around the counter and make me if he had to. I grabbed his gun, chambered a round and told him that if he came around the counter I'd shoot him.
He then started going off about how he knew me and knew that I'd never hurt anyone. I told him that he didn't know me at all and that I'd be more than happy to shoot him if he kept coming around the counter. Then he said that I'd be stupid to shoot him because what jury would believe that a crippled guy could be threatening enough to justify self defense. I told him I'd be happy with that risk. And so he came around the counter within 6 or 8 fett of me.
So I shot him. I aimed low and hit him in the gut. He fell to the ground and started crying. I stepped back from around the counter to the customer side to get some distance between us, and got out my cell phone. Several others already had theirs out. We dialed 911. As we were talking to the police, 2 men in ski masks burst in through the front door, yelling for everyone to get down. They didn't stop for us to react, but made a beeline for the till. Still with cell phone in one hand and Glock in the other. I shot the first one (in the gut again) and told them to get on the floor. The one didn't need to be told, and the other obeyed.
It was a long stretch of time before the cops and paramedics finally showed. There was also some problem with the lights going on and off. Parents were arriving to pick up their kids. It was a mess.
When the first police officer did get there, they didn't notice that I had the gun in the dark. He made sure the three on the floor were unarmed and then turned to me. By then I had reversed the gun around so I could hand it to him grip first. He looked surprised.
About then my alarm went off, but I wasn't ready for the dream to be over, so I hit the snooze button. I vaguely remember trying to explain what happened to the police. I also felt completely justified in shooting the first guy, but I was very worried about whether the second shooting was really self defense.
When I finally woke up and started telling the story to Chris, she had to tell me to quiet down. I guess I'd been yelling. Pretty intense.
If I wasn't so loyal to Gary and Todd, I'd call in sick just in case the dream was an omen, but I'm too responsible. Hopefully I won't shoot anyone today.
In other news, yesterday went very well. Everyone showed up for the Simulacrum game, and we all had a good time. It was all roleplaying as the player's tried to convince the local Baroness that they really have the family's best interests in mind.
